Description

Plot Point: Yukari has distributed a letter throughout all of Gensokyo, setting rules for a team-based wargame for those who are bored of nothing but typical spell card rules, promising to grant any one wish for the team who wins.  Those who are weak individually but strong in a group decide this provides an excellent opportunity; others simply want to prove their points; still others want the promised wish.  But, for only the second time in Touhou history (the first being "Labyrinth of Touhou"), the entire Touhou cast is involved...because now, Gensokyo is at WAR.
How It Works:  This is a point-and-click strategy game (left-click to confirm, right-click to cancel); in the main Story Mode, generally speaking, you play the role of the Hakurei Shrine faction, and declare war, battle against, and capture the other factions' territories until you win by having the entire map under your control.  For all the details you could possibly need, go grab the Instruction Pack from the Extras section on the left.  This game may look something like "Risk" at first glance, but trust me: 1) it plays nothing like it, and 2) it takes a lot longer (Story Mode does, anyway).
Want Extras?
Clear the game.  Simply clearing the main Story Mode game unlocks all of the following:
* National Mode.  A setup that emulates a multiplayer experience; all regions start off occupied, and factions are no longer concerned only with you; they'll attack each other now as well.  National Mode comes with the bonus characters on the left (and thus some bonus factions, as well), and lots of ways to tweak things; you can set how many and which factions will be present and change their starting memberlists, and you also get to play as any faction you'd like.  National Mode can use characters you've created yourself in the game's Extras section.  To get to it, click "Start" on the main menu, and it will now ask you which mode you'd like to play (Story Mode or National Mode).
* Difficulty Select for Story Mode.  Was the default setting of Normal too easy for you?  Now when you start a new Story Mode game, it will ask if you'd still like to play Normal, or if you'd prefer Hard or Lunatic.
* Extras Section.  Check out the CG art, videos, and character art; you've also earned the right to tweak the statistics of the characters you can hire in both Story and National Modes, and can also create new characters for use in National Mode.  (When you start a new game, regardless of mode, it will ask you whether you'd like to use the official default data, or the edited data you tweaked.)

Okay... Was just trying to repel Cirno's freaking army and got SO CLOSE to a 50%/50%, which WOULD have been a tie. Didn't realize they could still move, and they pushed themselves up to 51%. That's what I get for taking the Human Village with 3 armies after my blood.

Ok, so the "final" boss wasn't that hard, just a couple tries and got it. But THE final boss...oh GOD. It took me almost 15 hours just to defeat her.

Guys, if you want to try this game, go ahead, but for the love of all that is dear, download the clear data file, don't be a dumb idiot like me and think "meh, I'll finish it by myself because I'll feel more satisfied with myself". DON'T, it's hard beyond getting satisfaction out of finishing it properly. Aside from that, it's a pretty cool game, pretty fair up until the very end, and it's really easy to understand the rules. Just...just download the clear data file to enjoy the rest of the game.

To give an idea of how much time it took me, I had 318 Ouki when I finished it.

You need to run it through a locale emulator

having trouble running the game. i have tried changing the compatability, and am running through locale emulator, but it gives a popup in japanese that mentions (english 1.30b) and then opens a tiny window that i assume is the game, but has nothing going on in it. anyone else have this problem?

Update: i got it to work, i needed to run it as admin. silly me :>

The biggest issue with this download is the clear data. It kinda seems like the person who submitted the clear data made their own characters, and also gave them custom pfps. And so if they come up in Nat mode, the game just breaks.

I have found a possible solution for the clear data breaking the game when the characters that were manually added to the file show up. You need to click on "Extra" from the main menu, go to "New Character List", then click on one of the character names. After clicking through an error message, you should see the character sheet. Change the portrait to whatever you please, and the options "[Delete] [Confirm][Back]" should show up at the bottom. Click on delete to remove the glitched character. Do this for all the characters in the "New Character List", and the problem should be gone.

Note that this does not fix an existing campaign, so you will have to make a new campaign to benefit from this fix.

Edit: After further testing, I am pretty sure this fixes the issue with the current save file. I have also found a solution for if you want to edit a new character you created (this usually creates an exception due to a "syntax error" after hitting confirm whether you change anything or not). Pretty much, you just need to edit your stats, change your species to whatever you please (even the same one works), then click the back button (again, confirm breaks the game). It is worth noting the game sometimes deletes newly created characters after closing, but going into a campaign and saving seems to keep this from happening.

This game has no business being this good. I just beat Alice but i love the writing so far. The gameplay is fun but it is pretty difficult. Savescumming is basically required if you don't want to screw yourself over. My only complaint is that the artstyles for the different characters are all over the place. It is really jarring to see Reimu and Marissa drawn in different styles when they are together for so many story scenes. But I did get used to this oddity after a while. The story is pretty good. I love the characterization of the different characters and their interactions with each other.

Close to the end now. After Alice the game gets kinda easy due to how many powerful units the game gives you, except for the absolute powerhouse that is

Spoiler

yuuka. Yukari took me a few tries too. Clearing out the Final Final minions doesn't seem too hard too. But i've yet to see if the boss itself is as difficult as people say.

The writing throughout is still really really good. The biggest shame is honestly the 25 members cap. You can't fit all the named characters in there so you'll have to make a few sacrifices, which is a shame when some characters can have surprise unique dialogue when brought to certain battles, and so many characters have really good stats or skills that it's really hard to pick which ones to keep. Maybe I'm just weird about feeling bad about firing videogame characters from my army, even when they do have bad skills and clearly don't have further story content after recruiting them. (looking at you letty, who this game made into one of my favourite characters ever) Wish there was a way to just put characters on reserve or bring them back to prison for this purpose alone.

Finally finished the game on 24 hours. Sheesh the final 2 fights are hard. I ended up having to use cheat engine to beat the final boss just because it's ridiculous how much time it would take to beat her properly, in addition to the fact that to get to her in the first place you need to win another fight that isn't easy by itself and you could easily lose to it even with your absolute best units.  Shout outs to my man Junpei who's a randomly generated character at the start of the game who happened to have good ranged stats and a really good healing skill.

Spoilers for what the last 2 bosses are below, but this was my experience with them.

Spoiler

I think the fight with Shinki and her gang is actually really good despite being so challenging, it has a nice variety of characters which you can intuit what their abilities and weaknesses are. My final team to beat them ended up being Youmu (who has good stats and possibly the most useful skill in the game), another melee fighter (either komachi or Reimu), Yukari (Balanced stats and a decent skill), Aya (high range and speed glass cannon), and Marissa (same as Aya but a little bulkier, i used marissa for most of the game for her skill but it wasnt good enough for this fight due to how tankies the enemies were, but she was still the second best ranger other than Aya). Somehow once I beat Shiki once I was able to consistently beat her until the last defense points on her base, but I was only able to beat her last defense once and spent hours failing to beat her again. Idk what happened.

Then there is the final boss... It's just a gimmick, and made even worse that half of the best skills in the game (Yuyuko's halving lives, mima's stun, and other such blowouts), or skills that could cheese her (Eiki's judgement and Sakuya's turn delay) didnt seem to work at all here. I only got to fight her legitimately once but Man is it rough to have to beat her AND shinki. So i just cheated because I think beating Shinki's team is enough for this game, and i dont want to grind my units for 50 more turns. Though for a legitimate win, Eirin and Youmo are essential to keep alive during the fight, Youmo's skill can keep giving good damage without counterdamage, while Eirin is just a really good healer. Luna Child and Sunny milk might also be good to mitigate damage but they are frail when their skills don't work. Mystia's skill might be good but i have no idea how it works or if it even works, did get to try her skill in my cheating attempt and i think it made a difference but im not sure. Akyu's skill might also be useful but i had her fired at this point so i have no idea if it would even be successful or it would become like shiki's constant failure.

I honestly think the game would've been better without this boss.

Overall I think the biggest fault with this game is the balance of characters and the vagueness of information given to you. So many characters have overly balanced, expensive skills or ones that are straight up useless. Which makes playing them feel bad. Something is wrong when Wriggle dweebbug has one of the best skills in the game. There is also no way of knowing what enemy skills or stats do other than intuiting the numbers they take or deal. The buff and debuff system does not give you a single amount of info about what buff or debuff is applied to the characters in battle other than an arrow on their portrait. I think the counter system is really good as a resource managing system during battle, but some skills just have way too high of a cost or are too inconsistent (or both) to be useful. Eiki's is the worst example of this.

Another annoying thing is that named characters that you don't automatically get imprisoned you just have to get lucky to encounter them in some other army and have to get lucky to get them. A lot of the time they just withdraw from that army and then you have to wait for them to join another one if you want a chance at them again. That said i did get a lot of them naturally by playing, it's just that if you want a specific character that the story doesnt give you, then get ready for a LOT of savescumming. (I wasted like an hour trying to get komachi but i dont regret it).

The stat distribution of characters is handled mostly well, with only a few misses. like Sakuya having some of the most middling stats in the game, compared to other characters in the same level-area as her, and a pretty niche skill that doesn't save it, though atleast she has high research.

Despite all these flaws i think this game is still really really good. Definitely one of my favourite indie games of all time unironically. The gameplay loop is fun enough and the game has a balanced difficulty throughout the game, though with difficulty spikes and holes throughout. The fact that characters you get from the start of the game can still be useful at the end is really good. Characters only really fall off in the final final arc of the game, where you have to really fire your weakest performing characters for good ones to have a chance, but still fun. As i also said in earlier comments the quality of writing in this game is amazing and really develops the characters well imo.

Oh and the soundtrack remixes are nice.

One of the classics of the fangames. I remember picking this game up when moriya shrine was still on proboards, and it's long been one of my favorites to revisit now and again. Wish there'd be an updated version of it since there's so much more Gensokyo these days, but beggars, choosers.
