Description
The game involves Marisa and her friends who are searching for underground treaasures and fighting enemies. The player controls a set number of Touhou characters, each with their own unique offensive or defensive capabilities, around a grid-based field, in order to stop a horde of enemies from reaching their defensive line. During battle, each character gains experience points and when a certain level is reached, the character levels up. However, unlike any similar game in Touhou Chitei Daibu players are given the freedom to choose a particular character who will level up. Skill points can be allocated to selected characters to gain new abilities or attributes.

The battles play out on a grid-based map where the player controls a set number of characters and takes turns to order their units with available commands, such as moving, attacking and casting spells. However, the game utilizes a combo system, an attack power modifier that can be used to gain an advantage. Each allied unit has different stastics; In Touhou Chiheisen a character with low HP has a strong combo attack, and vice versa. This system provides equal opportunity for each character to defeat other characters with different statistic.

Our world is known as Gensokyo. Long ago, we were separated from the world you know by a great barrier magic, and our world has remained isolated and untarnished since. It is home for both humans and youkai; mystical beings among which you would find playful fairies, energetic spirits, whimsical ghosts, among any others. What the other world refers to as fantasy and myth is, to us, reality. Gensokyo itself contains two distinct realms for living and the dead respectively. The spirits of the Netherworld are managed by the master of Hakyugokurou, the ghost princess Yuyuko Saigyouji. The phantoms of Hakyugokurou revel in its majestic garden, which is carefully maintained by the dutyful Youmu Konpaku, Saigyouji's half-ghost retainer. Talented in the arts of swordplay, Youmu Konpaku serves also as the vigilant protector of the realm. It is from this realm of the dead that our story begins. She speaks with Yukari Yakumo, the youkai of boundaries...

Battles in Story of A Lost Sky plays out on a grid-based map, with the player controlling a set number of characters across maps, each side takes turns moving and attacking. Outside the world map players are able to customize their character with different items, spells and traits.
